Providing a centralised platform to track strains of avian influenza viruses.

Healthy wildlife, healthy Australia

Wildlife Health Australia (WHA) leads national action to respond to emerging health issues affecting Australia's wildlife. The health of Australia’s wildlife, animals in agriculture, domestic animals and its human population are all fundamentally linked. Many diseases that can affect humans and livestock often emerge in wildlife. Effective surveillance of wildlife health is therefore vital to human health, agriculture, the environment and biodiversity in Australia.

Better data management and information sharing

We are building a specialised electronic data platform for targeted surveillance data from the NAIWB Surveillance Program. This program tracks strains of avian influenza viruses found in apparently healthy wild birds around Australia. The platform will improve data management and sharing of information on avian influenza viruses through:

  • Streamlining the data upload process – allowing data from surveillance partners to be uploaded efficiently and consistently.
  • Developing electronic data validation – ensuring data integrity and efficient data management by verifying data accuracy and quality against pre-defined rules.
  • Providing a single, centralised location for data storage – data from surveillance partners will be stored in a single secure location, improving efficiency for data analysis and reporting.
  • Maintaining secure data access – only those with appropriate authorisation will be able to access the data.

Helping to protect Australia’s wildlife, industries, and community

Improved data management and information sharing for avian influenza in wildlife will enhance Australia's capability to detect and respond to the threat of avian influenza.
